GT takeoff mufflers man vs auto
So I am looking at various sites for some takeoff mufflers to get rid of the cork Ford put on my v-6;some just state GT takeoff while others specify manual or automatic. Does it matter? I'm assuming there is a difference if it is being specified, but I can't see what it would be unless the routing of the exhaust bt the 2 is different and the pipes are a different length. (?)

Need advice oh ye holders of Mustang knowledge.

i don't think there is any difference auto vs manual.

i would suggest checking with Paulboy on our site...he sells takeoff items and can almost always beat the prices of others.

Hmmm I don't think it mattes for just the cans themselves (mufflers). I got the pair off of Ebay from 50resto I think, I don't know, it's been a year. I also got the GT rear bumper kit. I think the resources here at this site have great selections and vendors.

I think I got mine from here but I now see what you mean:

http://www.newtakeoff.com/mustang.aspx

A year ago they only had the mufflers. I took my car to a local shop and he made me a custom H-Pipe with true duals. He cut it just behind the cats and all new all the way to the mufflers.

Also RETAIN the rubber sound vibration dampers. Just have him cut them off your old pipe. The 4.0 vibrates alot and these things made a difference because I went back to have them added. Luckily he didn't throw away my old pipe.

If you want to get rid of the V6 raspy sound have a local shop put you in some 18" tube style resonators. Mine have a spiral flow inside and they are staggered to change the pulses, meaning, one is installed about 4 inches further back in the pipe. These cars have plenty of room compared to my earlier Fox body cars.

Good luck!

From my recent research on GT mufflers, some folks think the manual mufflers are a little louder than the automatic version. I purchased both (got a great deal on two sets) and tried them. Could not tell the difference. (I am 53 so maybe that had something to do with it.) I went with the auto as it had the rolled tip which looked better to me.

There are pictures on the net of the inside of the auto and manual and the manual does appear to flow better.

I found GT mufflers cheap locally, nothing on the net even came close (shipping is not cheap). My local muffler shop gets them all the time and sells them cheap. Local Mustang clubs will have members upgrading their exhaust and sell them cheap also.

Hope this helps.

Yes that is very true. I searched shops all over last year and no one had a set of pull offs.

While I was on the rack a BRAND new GT rolled in!!! Dang it! He would have given them to me.

So are the duals for the v-6 more for aesthetics or is there a true performance advantage?

Thanks for the tip on the resonators. I assume it mellows the exhaust sound?

Also, what is considered a good price by everyone?

N/A V6's are more for looks, but F/I V6's should definitely go with true duals. Also there has been big discussion about auto vs man mufflers, which I think is just talk. I dont see how or why they would do that.

I went the aesthetic route for sure. The custom H-pipe was almost free as I bring him a bunch of biz. The resonators were added the following weekend. Honestly I just don't want to hear the car. My commute is 50 miles one way.

Being a Fox tuner and one of mine has a Kenne Bell on it I didn't take this car seriously at all. I sold one Fox to a good friend who begged me and I was looking at Maximas. My wife told me to just get another Mustang since I haven't ever kept anything around long if it wasn't a Mustang and I didn't want to commute in the K/B Fox.

I got the CAI more for potential MPG gains than anything else. Only the fact that it was $95 shipped and is much higher quality than expected is the only reason I got it. $200+? Not happening.

My biggest gains came from this weekend adding a Diablo Predator. This car will chirp 3rd gear more than half the time now and that was NOT expected. Maybe the combination as a whole made this possible. It's an automatic also.

Do I take the 4.0 seriously now? hmmm, well honestly about as serious as I took my brand new 1992 GT and later another 1990 GT I bought used. Stock for Stock this 4.0 laid down the same exact ET on our 1/8th mile track as both of those cars have. Oh, and they have added 60 feet to the track since 2002 since it wasn't a full 1/8th. It is still a little shy but it is a country back woods track. It is only about 2 tenths off a full 1/8th now. Back then it was more like 4 tenths.

I may sneak down to the dyno soon. I will update you if you like. I will run the stock tune against a 93 firm shifting tune to see the differences. If the car lays down more than 190 to the wheels with a "stock tune" I would say it's coming from the CAI and exhaust but I don't expect much if any gains.

when I got mine (GT Takeoffs)there was no mention of auto vs stick. They are both the same. I got them because of looks and sound. That was before the xcharger was put on.
I also put the GT bumper on,also a takeoff.
looks good, sounds good and really screams

ANY muffler will be an improvement over the single stock sixer muffler, which is restrictive. I had a 4.0L with dual GT take-offs (and x-pipe) and another 4.0L with the single GT take-off. In my experience, there's no performance improvement duals vs single (GT take-offs). The sound wasn't that much different either IMO between the two cars side by side. But duals look good (I cut my stock bumper). Keep in mind that both cars were naturally aspirated. Had I gone FI, I would have added headers to duals, FWIW.
