Second Monday Scotch Tasters Society and I was able to make it this month.

"Kitty Malt" for last month:
Pretty tasty, a little peat smoke but not overpowering. Nice Japanese whiskey.

This month we did Michigan whiskey - very similar taste profiles. Not surprising, all were wheat based. Somewhat sweet overall, lot of vanilla to them.

This was the full line up for tonight, we had 4 wheat whiskeys and a "kitty malt" again this month.

And our Michigan based Wheat Whiskeys

Followed by our Kitty Malt. The club paid $350 for this bottle. It wasn't what we were planning but the shop we use ordered this so asked if we would like it.

Very tasty, given the price it isn't one I am going to get used to! But it was one of the best we've had, and was the best taste of the evening.

Last night was the second Monday of the month - so time to sample some whiskeys. Since it is July we did American whiskey (with one Canadian rye sneaking in eh?)

The evening line up:

I shared the Jeffersons Reserve Groth Reserve. We knew it was going to be good, after all it has "reserve" in the name twice! The Jefferson products have an interesting history. Eight generations back a grandmother was arrested for selling "alcohol products" as a bootlegger. The Groth Reserve is aged 8 years in new oak barrels, then aged again in cabernet sauvignon casks from the Groth vineyards in Napa Valley. It has a red tint to it as a result, and is very tasty.

We also had a visitor keeping an eye on us

The Stranahans and Jefferson's Reserve. Both very good sipping whiskey

Best bang for the buck though is the David Nicholson 1843. Less than $20 and great flavor. Not as complex as Stranahans or Jefferson but quite good

Made it to another Second Monday Scotch Tasters society. Some really good whiskeys this time, as usual.

With our relocation I haven't been able to make it to Scotch Club. I was planning to go this month for Irish tasting, but we had a severe snow storm and it was not a good night to make a 1+ hour drive in good weather.

Tonight though I am in the process of thinning my collection. Killed off a bottle I've had for awhile. Picked it up on my last trip through Canada. A Forty Creek Canadian crafted whiskey. Very tasty. Lots of toffee notes and very drinkable. Sweeter than a scotch, but a different taste profile from a bourbon.

Have to make room for more bottles in the collection so killed this one off.

I like Forty Creek's whiskeys. If you liked that, next time you're across the boarder, hit up an LCBO, and look for some of the whiskeys from Still Waters Distillery under the Stalk & Barrel name. What did you think of the Crown Royal rye a while back? I've been eyeing a bottle of that, but I'm afraid it would be a disappointment after the S & B rye.

The Crown Royal Rye was okay, nothing great. I'm not a big fan of the Crown Royal stuff though.

I will look for the Stalk and Barrel

Never been a big fan of Crown Royal either. It's not bad, but nothing to write home about. I had hopes for the 90% rye, but was sitting on the fence. Thanks for pushing me over.
