Homebrew competition - 01-16-2014

My brew buddy and I went to a local brewery (Sweetwater) and the guy told us about a brewing competition around here. So although we've only done three, five gallons brews so far, and all have been boxed recipes, we sat down last night and came up with our own recipe from scratch to enter into the competition.

So, we're doing a honey wheat beer that should be right around 5-6% abv. Entering our very first recipe into a beer competition is pretty bold, but hey, what's the worst that can happen? haha!

The worst that can happen is that it turns out to be undrinkable.
Send me a sample and I'll give y'all my opinion!

Well, the beer turned out AWESOME. Everyone that has tried it has absolutely loved it. We were judged a 28 out of 50 on the scale, which equates to a "good" beer. The judges said it was a tasty beer that they enjoyed drinking, but that it didn't fit the category. We weren't aware that the category played as big of a part in judging as it did, but hey, you live and you learn. Either way, we made a good beer that was judged on a national level and did rather well considering it was our first homemade recipe homebrew.

Sorry for the long reply... but yep! We are going to add a little more honey to the batch and a little less oat, as it was kinda over powering.

I think next batch is going to be an IPA though.

Sounds good. Jordan looooves IPAs. I'm not a huge fan, but I do like Lagunita's Hop Stupid and Sam's Rebel IPA is also pretty dang good. They can be a little too bitter on the back end for my liking, but I do like the citrus notes.
