'86 Vert 32 valve conversion blog link - 03-21-2009

I have started blogging about the project I'm working on. Some of you know that I'm doing a complete conversion on the '86 LX using a complete '99 Cobra as a parts car...engine, tranny, IRS, ABS, dash, console, seats, etc.

I finally did get the wiring harness out. The blog is updated. I hope to get some work done on the vert next week. I haven't turned a wrench since last tuesday, and I'm having withdrawals.

Made some unexpected progress this week in the way of parts. I had planned to use a Fluidyne radiator made for a fox body. That way I wouldn't have to change out the lower radiator supports, and the new unit would just drop right in. Well...change in plans. I scored a used Steeda full core ultra-cool for $150. I will have to change the lower support brackets, but got a step up in parts level and saved $300. Gotta love it. Still need to borrow a folding engine hoist to get the V6 out so I can work in the empty engine bay.

The engine is out (3.8 V6). That was truely the easiest engine I have ever pulled. The tranny is sitting on the jack. I got hungry, so it won't get pulled 'till tomorrow. I put the engine on the stand, and is clear now that the head gasket on the driver's side is blown. We never let it run hot, as I was pulling into the driveway when the gasket let go. I will be putting the engine and transmission on Craig's list in the next few days, unless someone here wants it. It would be an easy rebuild...probably just rings, bearings and gaskets. I think it really just needs the head gasket, but since it is out...

I updated the blog again today. I have scored several NOS and used parts at great prices over the last couple of weeks and am excited. The new springs and the Kmember brace arrived yesterday.
