Cole, be sure to do your research before undertaking any build or swap. Think about what power you want to be at, but also as mentioned, if you have to maintain CARB certified mods, to comply with your local legal requirements. An engine swap means changing the PCM, and that may result in a problem as well.

Whatever you decide, you'll find someone on this site who's done it! Whether building your engine, or using any form of power adder, or swapping to some V8: it's been done successfully.

Tuff to build the "meanest 4.0" and stay safe. I assume this is your daily driver which needs to be totally reliable. So you have to consider if you can afford a catastrophic engine or transmission failure.

Bob has one of the "meanest 4.0" out there but people tend to forget his is not a daily driver at 21,000 miles. Other of use have pushed them beyond 200,000 miles, JimC included with an X-Charger but that will not get you close to Bob's power level. Bob's Mustang is obviously pretty much purpose built for the drag strip but I doubt it would last in a true daily driver environment or on the open track. If his engine had forged pistons then maybe, but still on extreme edge of safe.

Nobody has had any luck with dual power adders on the 4.0 no matter what type of boost they choose. All it takes to break a otherwise stock 4.0SOHC it a little bit of detonation and it's all over. The stock pistons will break every time.

If I were you I would settle for a stock X-Charger, Vortech or ProCharger and call it good. This will keep it reasonably safe. But nothing is guaranteed when you start upping the power on a stock 4.0 engine. Even a tank of bad gas could cause the engine to fail under boost.

Here's a link to Bob's Mustang if you really want the "meanest 4.0" out there or something similar:

Good luck with your build.
