Auto Stop / Start Technology - 11-12-2017

Does anyone have a vehicle that features auto stop/start technology? If so what are your impressions of it and how seamlessly does it operate and how noticeable is it when the vehicle's engine stops and restarts? I rode in a friend's 2017 Chevy Malibu that had it and it was annoying. There was a noticeable shudder when the engine restarted. The Malibu's system did not have a button or switch to turn the feature off. It was on all of the time. I notice that all Ford 2017-18 Escapes with Ecoboost engines have this feature as standard equipment, but there is a button to turn the system off. The default position is "on", but you have the option to turn it off once the engine is started. Anybody have experience with auto stop start?

My wife's BMW has it, and yes it is very annoying and noticeable. Shudder when it shuts off at a stop, pause when starting to pull away and a shudder when it starts back uup.

Luckily on the BMW you can hit the off button and it stays off.

Now with twin turbo 3.5LV6.
Screw you photobucket! I'm not going to pay you to now use my own pictures

In automobiles, a start-stop system or stop-start system automatically shuts down and restarts the internal combustion engine to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions. This is most advantageous for vehicles which spend significant amounts of time waiting at traffic lights or frequently come to a stop in traffic jams. Start-stop technology may become more common with more stringent government fuel economy and emissions regulations. This feature is present in hybrid electric vehicles but has also appeared in vehicles which lack a hybrid electric powertrain. For non-electric vehicles, fuel economy gains from this technology are typically in the range of 3-10 percent, potentially as high as 12 percent. In the United States, idling wastes approximately 3.9 billion gallons of gasoline per year automobiles, a start-stop system or stop-start system automatically shuts down and restarts the internal combustion engine to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The system is supposed to save fuel, but I still don't like what I experienced in my friends Malibu. It's very annoying and I wonder what the long term effects will be on the starter and battery. Also I wonder if auto stop start doesn't propose a potential safety hazard in certain driving conditions. Example: you're stopped at an intersection or entrance to a drive way or parking lot waiting to make a left hand turn across the path of on coming traffic. The engine shuts down as you wait to make your turn. There is a break in oncoming traffic with a short distance between you and the oncoming car. Will the engine restart instantly and accelerate smoothly or will there be a lag making it possible for you to be T-boned by the oncoming car? At this point I don't trust the technology. At least Ford gives you the choice of turning off the system in the Escape where as the Malibu doesn't. I would feel better if the default setting on auto stop/start were off rather than on.
